Unknown treasure
EAST COAST art buffs love the work of photographer Henry Wessel. It’s about time the Point Richmond resident started getting some props in the Bay Area as well.
“Wessel is very well known in New York and Europe. He’s a local treasure, but he’s not as well known here,” says Sandra Sloan of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which is hosting an extensive exhibition of his work through April 22. The show features approximately 80 photographs, including some early works that have never been shown publicly.
For nearly 30 years, Wessel has captured the minutiae of American life, often casting an unexpected light on the everyday sign, tree, or suburban home. “There’s a tremendous amount of detail in his photographs, even if they might seem stark and singular,” Sloan says.
