Unlikely Allies

Bob Pack’s children were killed by a driver with a history of driving under the influence. Lane Garrison was driving under the influence when he crashed his car and killed one of his passengers. Now, they’re working together to stop drunk driving.

Garrison, a former star of the TV series Prison Break, wrecked his SUV in Beverly Hills in December while driving under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. A 17-year-old boy riding with him died, and the 27-year-old actor pled guilty to vehicular manslaughter. While waiting for his sentencing (he is currently serving 90 days in prison for psychological evaluation), he heard about a video Pack was shooting in Los Angeles to caution teens about drunk driving. Garrison approached Pack about participating.

“At first I was reluctant,” says Pack, whose two children died in a 2003 hit-and-run accident in Danville. “But I talked to him at length about it. He accepted responsibility, and I got a sense of his remorse. I made the decision that instead of using an actor who hadn’t suffered tragedy, somebody who has been impacted would be more powerful.”

The video, Graduation Day, features actors who enact a high school graduation and ensuing party. The night ends with a car crash, at which point a teary-eyed Garrison, seated before a white background, urges kids not to drink and drive. Pack hopes that corporate sponsors will help to distribute it free of charge to every high school in the country.
